How to Make Bubble Hash: Top 3 Methods

How to make bubble hash is a frequently asked question on google as many people attempt to make their very own homemade hash.

From experience, we know that doing so isn’t easy. To help, this article goes in-depth on the top 3 bubble hash extraction methods. But first, we need to understand what hash is.

What is Hash?

Hash is a potent form of cannabis made from the extracts of a cannabis plant. It is quite different from ganja a.k.a marijuana. The main difference is in its preparation method, which affects the potency of the end product.

Hashish is a paste made from the resinous gland of the trichomes plant through a purified and compressed preparation to increase the drug’s potency. When properly refined, its THC can be as high as 60%.

You can consume the hash by ingesting it orally, smoking it, or vaporizing it. The hashish comes in different colors, like black, red, green, or brown, and its flavor is unique.

Kief is the matter left over from separating the trichomes from the plant. The green particles in this picture are the leftover plant matter. Another round of sifting will be required for this batch.

Types of Bubble Hash

Bubble hash is sometimes referred to as ice hash, water hash, or solvent-less hash, which is due to its preparation method. Furthermore, there are also different types of bubble hash depending on the extraction technique and starting material.

Trim-processed bubble hash

As the name implies, this bubble hash is made using trim which includes sugar leaves and stems. The quality of the final product is usually lower when compared to other methods of preparation due to its lower trichome yield. The quality of the end product can be improved by using smaller and smaller micron bags to remove the excess plant material.

Bud-processed bubble hash

This type of bubble hash is made by processing the entire flower bud and therefore has a higher yield of trichomes. However, it also has a lot more plant material which makes proper sifting especially important for this method.

Mixed-micron bubble hash

Mixed-micron bubble hash is produced from both flower and trim. Its name refers to the use of micron bags of different sizes. The larger screens filter out the bulk of unwanted plant materials, while the smaller screen filters the plant material left over by the larger screen. This process will usually produce a higher-quality bubble hash.

Bubble Hash vs. Traditional Hash Method

When considering bubble hash vs. hash, the difference is in the method of extraction. Bubble hash uses Ice water to extract the trichomes from the marijuana plant while traditional hash is extracted without it.

The quality of bubble hash is almost always better than traditional hash. Since ice water extraction is a superior method, it is common for bubble hash to be 20% stronger than regular hash.

For traditional hash, the THC concentration is usually around 50%, while that of the ice water hash is over 60%.

How to Make Bubble Hash

Method 1: Coffee Filter Bubble Hash

This method of refining bubble hash is the simplest DIY technique but produces the least refined products compared to other methods.

What You’ll Need

  • 7-14 grams of bud or trim per run (either or both)
  • 0.5-1.0 liters glass jar with lid
  • Kitchen sieve or window screen
  • Coffee filters
  • Scissors

What to Do

  1. Use the scissors to cut the trim or buds into smaller pieces. Smaller plant material means more of the plant will be exposed to the ice water.
  2. Use the sieve or screen to separate the kief from the stems, leaves, and other materials, by running the trim or bud over it. Ensure that you do this over the glass jar and fill it with kief to ¼ of its capacity.
  3. Pour ice-cold water into the jar and cover it. Shake the jar until there is no clump of the plant left in the jar. Using a paint mixer to achieve a better result will be easier.
  4. Open the jar after 30 minutes and sieve the residue floating on top. Pour the residue into another jar and add water, then continue the process.
  5. Allow the mixture to settle for 15-30 minutes, then pour the water out, leaving an inch in the bottom of the jar. The residue left behind is the hashish.
  6. Mix the residue with cold water and let it settle for 15 minutes.
  7. Pour the mixture through a coffee filter carefully to avoid spillage. Then, roll up the resin and squeeze every drop of moisture out of it.
  8. Place the resin and filter on a paper towel to remove any leftover moisture.
  9. Dry the wrap, unwrap the towel, and carefully unroll the filter. Scrape off the resin from the filter, and you have your hashish.
  10. Before smoking the hash in a pipe, you must form a solid mass by pressing the hash firmly together. This will help the hash bubble as you smoke it rather than melting into liquid.

Method 2: Bubble Hash with Micron Bag

Making bubble hash with a micron bag requires you to acquire a piece of reusable equipment to help you make larger quantities. Unlike the coffee filter, this method is relatively easier, especially when scraping the hash of the bubble bag.

What You’ll Need

  • Bud and trim (50-250g)
  • Two big-size buckets
  • Paddle for stirring
  • Fine mesh micron bag (bubble bag)

Note: A rule of thumb states that you will require 10 grams of flower to produce 1 gram of hash.

What To Do

  1. Pour all the bud/trim into a bucket and add enough ice and water to submerge it. Then, stir for 15 minutes.
  2. Properly arrange the mesh bag according to size, placing them inside one other. Then, place the mesh bag into the other bucket.
  3. Carefully pour the fluid through the layered mesh to avoid spillage. Then, allow it to drain for 15 minutes.
  4. Start removing the bags one after the other and drain the water from them. The first mesh should contain more plants, while the last should have the least materials. The last mesh should contain the highest quality of hash.
  5. Remove all the trichomes from the last mesh and spread them on a flat, dry surface for a couple of hours for it to dry. You can now press it into hash.
  6. You can check other filters for a viable hash but avoid numerous plant matter.

Method 3: Bubble Hash with a Bubbleator B-Quick

This is an automated method that uses the Bubbleator to fast-track the drying process of the hash. The Bubbleator makes the process easier and faster, and it is by far the best way to dry and cure bubble hash.

What You’ll Do

  • Trim or bud (50-250g)
  • Bubbleator B-Quick with zipper and micron bags.
  • One large bucket

What To Do

  1. Pour the trim or bud into the zipper bag and properly seal it. Then, place the zipper bag into the Bubbleator, and pour an equal quantity of ice and water into it until you get 4℃. Close the machine, turn it on, and set it to work for 15 minutes.
  2. Fix the two bags with the machine into one another, and place them into the bucket. Ensure the excess fabric on the bucket’s rim is properly secured to prevent water from flowing.
  3. As the timer stops, remove the bag containing the rim or bud and empty it into the bucket. Then, allow it to drain well.
  4. Remove the two filters containing the hash from the bucket and pick the one with the finest mesh bag. Squeeze the water out gently and allow it to dry within 24 hours. Repeat the process for different batches.

Benefits of Solventless Extraction vs. Solvent Extraction

There are numerous reasons why solventless extraction is better than solvent extraction, and we will explore them in detail. Let’s start with the fact that a solventless extraction does not require a solvent to breakdown down the trichomes, which eliminates the risk of having harmful chemicals in the final extract.

Also, solventless extraction is far easier to practice at home. On the other hand, solvent extraction can be dangerous when practiced outside the confines of a lab. And this is because solvents are odorless and flammable, which increases the chances of an explosion when there is an open flame.

Best Practices for Making Bubble Hash

Hash cut into 3 pieces.

Keeping things as cold as possible.

When making your bubble hash, it is better to keep the process cold because the ice cold helps freeze and separate the trichomes from the plant. It is ideal for carrying out the process in a cool environment, preferably the north pole. Since the north pole is out of reach, you can improvise using a cold room or large storage freezer.

Consider the source of your water.

The chemical composition of the water you are using impacts the taste of the hash. You are advised to use purified water against tap water because it does not have chlorine, fluorine, or other compounds that might affect your hash.

Always use quality weed.

Poor-quality weed will yield poor hash. But, once you are acquainted with the process, you can use your premium trims to get the best quality hash. So, you can use them to test the process in the first few runs to minimize wastage.

Make use of a freeze dryer against an air dryer.

Freeze dryers help reduce the hash drying time by half, which means you can enjoy your bubble hash faster. When it comes to drying bubble hash, the freezer dryer is miles ahead of the air dryer.
