How To Make Cannabis Tea At Home: 5 Easy Steps

If you’re looking for a new way to enjoy cannabis, learning how to make cannabis tea will do you good.

Here’s why:

CBD tea not only allows for a different way to enjoy your favourite plant, but it also helps cut back on smoking and vaping and is in effect, much healthier. It can also provide you with a high without calories or sugars.

Additionally, it’s easy to make, adaptable, comes in different flavours, and you can decide how potent you want it to be.

Now, we’ll explain all of this in much detail later within this five-step guide, but for now, remember this:

A cup of cannabis-infused tea is like summer in a cup— just what you need during cold winter nights in Canada.

Tempted much? Let’s begin!

What is CBD Tea?

Made with marijuana flower or a product of it, Cannabis tea is the beverage form of CBD. You can also make it from cannabis stems and sugar leaves.

Furthermore, Cannabis-infused tea has all the psychoactive effects that other cannabis products have, and anyone can make it at home— or purchase it from a dispensary.

As for the flavouring part, well, the possibilities are endless.

You can make your CBD tea with any and every flavour, whether it’s Earl Grey, chamomile, rose, or honey.

Like edibles, cannabis tea takes about 30-90 minutes to pass through your digestive system and the bloodstream and reach the liver to get metabolized.

In other words, it takes thirty to ninety minutes for you to start feeling the effects of Cannabis tea.

How To Make Cannabis-Infused Tea?

Now, let’s get to the main part: how do you make Cannabis tea?

While the recipe isn’t that of a traditional tea, and you can’t just dunk a tea bag into hot water to make it, this isn’t rocket science either.

Making CBD tea is as easy as can be— all it takes is these five steps:

Step 1: Activating the Cannabinoids

To activate cannabinoids (like THC and CBD), you have to go through a process called decarboxylation.

Not following this step means the tea won’t have any effects because the cannabinoids will not be able to interact with your body’s natural endocannabinoid system.

It is also important to decarboxylate so that the THCA in the cannabis can be converted to THC, which will in turn, help you get the euphoric feeling that you expect from cannabis.

Now, there are two ways in which you can do this. Here’s one way:

  • Preheat the oven to 200-245°F
  • Grind or break up the flower by hand into small and evenly sized pieces.
  • Evenly spread the cannabis buds on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper
  • Bake for approximately 30 minutes (make sure it doesn’t overcook)

After you have decarboxylated the cannabis, you can now proceed towards the tea-making process.

Step 2: Add Fat

Adding fats is important as CBD is lipid-soluble and needs to be combined with fat before you can move towards infusing.

First, take 4 cups of water and boil it in a pot.

Next, add 1 tbsp of coconut oil or unsalted butter and dissolve it completely.

Step 3: Infuse

After you have added fat, add one gram of decarboxylated cannabis to the pot and let it simmer for at least 15 minutes on low heat.

Simmering allows for infusion as well as preservation of the plant’s properties.

Remember that heating the cannabis at very hot temperatures can burn the terpenes, which give CBD its flavour and aroma.

Cannabis enthusiasts suggest using a premium flower while making CBD tea so that quality and premium taste are guaranteed.

That’s because a premium flower is not only rich in scent but also in taste and appearance, which ensures delicious cannabis tea.

Step 4: Strain

After you have allowed the cannabis to simmer and marinate in the water, the flavours have been infused.

Finally, it’s time to strain.

Strain the cannabis water into a bowl or teapot by pouring the water through a strainer or cheesecloth.

Your tea is now ready— pour yourself a cup, sit back, and enjoy!

How To Make CannabisTea Stronger?

Earlier, we mentioned that you can control the potency of Cannabis tea.

You may want to do this if you made a tea that didn’t have much effect or simply because you want to.

To make cannabis-infused tea more potent, you can add the following:

  1. Kief: Kief is basically dried and processed trichomes. Add it to the water when simmering. However, be careful to not add too much as kief is potent.
  2. Rick Simpson Oil (RSO): The Rick Simpson Oil is one of the most potent cannabis oils and doesn’t taste too well. But you can add a little bit of it to your cup or during the simmering process if you really want to make your tea more potent.
  3. Tinctures: Add tinctures directly to your cup to increase potency. Any tincture works, but if you want a creamier consistency, we suggest an oil tincture.

Effects Of CBD Tea

There are both positive and negative effects of CBD tea.

The positives include the gradual and extended release of cannabinoids, which results in a gentle and prolonged high as compared to smokable options.

However, this can also have a negative effect on some people, as the effects can sometimes last up to eight hours, and delayed onset can also lead to overconsumption.

To avoid overconsumption, wait at least 2 hours before pouring yourself another cup.

It has anti-inflammatory properties as well as pain relief properties for chronic pain, and since there is no smoke involved, lung irritation is also eliminated.

Furthermore, cannabis-infused tea aids in digestion and is therapeutic for people with digestive issues like nausea, vomiting, and irritable bowel syndrome.

Lastly, the ability to experiment with sweeteners and spices in the tea makes it an enjoyable method of consumption!

However, this can also mean that some people may make it more potent than their bodies can handle.

Cannabis can interact with certain medications as well, so it’s always important to consult a healthcare professional before consumption.

FAQs

How long do you boil cannabis tea for?

Boil your cannabis tea for no more than 15 minutes. Exposing it to too much heat can burn the terpene, which will sabotage the taste.

How much cannabis should you put in tea?

It is recommended to put only 1 gram (0.00353 oz) in a pot with 4 cups of boiling water. So, the ratio to follow is 1:4.

Can you drink cannabis leaves as tea?

Yes, you can. Cannabis tea may contain lower levels of cannabinoids if you use cannabis fan leaves. However, almost every part of the plant can be used to make CBD tea.

Is it healthy to eat cannabis leaves?

Yes, cannabis, like all other vegetables, is healthy to eat. Its leaves contain beneficial phytochemicals that are hardly found elsewhere. You can consume cannabis leaves and flowers raw and use them as a healthy addition to salads, smoothies, and juices.
